Cody, Wyoming

Today we got up and had a nice breakfast that Stephanie whipped up and Kate surprised me with a Guy Harvey T-Shirt for my birthday. All this year I thought I was 33, but it turns out I was 32. So when I turned 33 today, it was like getting a whole year back.

We decided to head of to Cody, Wyoming today to visit the Buffalo Bill Cody Historical Center because it had been recommended to us. It took us about 3 hours or so to get there by the time we stopped and looked at a few sites and a few animals. We made a few stops to play in the snow that was still in the mountains we were traveling through.

We were all pretty hungry by the time we got into Cody and ready for a good meal. We wanted to get a good Wyoming hamburger so we asked a lady at the visitors center and she said Irma’s Hotel was the place to go. We got there and were blown away. Irma’s was built in 1908 by Buffalo Bill and still has most of the original building. I had a cowboy burger, ½ pound of beef with bbq sauce and onion rings on top. Kate and Steph split Irma’s signature burger, Big Thunder. It was really good and I’m really glad we went there.

After lunch, we headed over to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Outside they had a man cooking traditional cowboy food with traditional cowboy tools. He had some samples of beans and biscuits like the original cowboys would have eaten. We had had a little taste and I have to say it was really good.

Jim was still on a pretty good high from seeing the wolves yesterday, so it was good to get a photo with one. If you don’t know, Jim went to NC State, so he is Wolfpack to the bone.

Jim and Steph took a second to say hey to Buffalo Bill.

If you ever get the chance to get to Cody, WY and have any interest at all in the old West, you should certainly go to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. It is made up of 5 separate museums and each has an extensive collection. I would say that it rivals the Smithsonian as far as things from the West are concerned. The 5 museums are: Western Art, Firearms, Plains Indians, Yellowstone Natural History, and Buffalo Bill. You could spend half a day in each of them, but we didn’t have that kind of time so we blasted through them and were pretty tired by the end. Kate almost got eaten by a bear…

And I took a little ride to get off my feet for a bit. I did manage to stay on for 8 seconds.

After we left the museum, we got a little Dairy Queen and made a quick run to Wal-Mart to get some supplies and headed by to camp to get some supper and prepare to leave. We packed up what we could and got to bed early enough that we could get up and get ready to head to Washington tomorrow. More to come!
